    I

Solitude and secrecy were the primacy.
    Next the dance of corals
    that lived their spiraled voyage
to achieve - over centuries -
    the marvel of a birth
    on the Caribbean surface.

    Coast ever newly formed
cradled by swelling waves - virgin -
    tracing the silhouette of mystery
    eternally gray
eternally renovated - and renovating -
in the face of the rocks.

    It was a passionate Guanahatabey
    who drew love in circles
    of blood and minerals.
In the hollow of his caverns
    magic appeared.

    And later, the deluded admiral
who noted in his logbook the discovery
    of cranes, white and gigantic,
    like monks.

And what's to say of the corsairs
and pirates? It was their hideout
    and retreat.
They planted gold in its waters
    as in a natural safe.

    Today the Tumbita Criolla
    performs for visitors and immigrants
    of all colors and nations
    while, with naive vanity,
    the woodland musicians
    match the transcendental
    rhythm of a sucu-suco.

but the Isle continues to be
    everyone's and no one's!

    II

The renowned and the rare I came to know
in the green wisdom of its red mangroves.
The spray of its beaches -
    voluble as females -
    flirted with my adolescence,
and the sands of blackest marble
    guided my bare feet
to hidden places perfumed by the woods
    of all the sunken galleons.

    Isle of incredible flora -
    pines and pot-bellied palms --
    special creature!

    Now I comprehend the motives
    of that Indian,
    of Christopher Columbus,
    of the Corsairs and Pirates,
of Mongo Rives and his Tumbita Criolla,
    of the visitors and immigrants.

I perceive the ligth in their fascinated eyes,
as they, like me, lose themselves
    in delicious fantasy
    seeking the lost trail
    of an eternal youth
    filled with illusions
    like this isle,
    incomparable daughter of the Caribbean.
