To a Frangipani Tree (genus Plumeria)

You stay inviolate from wandering beasts' attacks,
No curious animal feasts on your slender leaves;
You thrive in harsh conditions, wiry and tough,
Yet have a beauty rarely found in hardy things;
And while the looks of others quickly fade,
Your lingering charm resists the assaults of Time.

Inspire those inclined to yield to adversity,
And those who run behind a transient, fleeting boon,
For Nature is a great teacher, nourishing our minds
With fruitful lessons spoken slow and clear,
And flowers of a tree can be guiding stars
That lead us over billows safely to the shore.
