I open my eyes,
and sure enough, you are there
where you said you’d be: in my mind.
I’m aware
that you are well-read,
that you have seen it all and
are also too cool for my school.
You are
like an elegant smile,
lovely and sweet, like a kiss
between your soft and southern lips.
I thought poetry was long gone
and my feelings too, but I was wrong.
You’ve given the night many colors other
than just black and added extra hours to my Oregon days.
